Multiplication
The Stages of Calculation are designed to provide a structured and consistent approach to teaching and learning around multiplication. Students are introduced to the concept of multiplication and gradually progress through different stages of calculation. Initially, pupils learn to multiply single-digit numbers using visual aids such as arrays or repeated addition. This helps them grasp the basic concept of combining equal groups. As they advance, they start memorizing multiplication tables, which enable them to quickly recall products of numbers. With this foundation, they move on to mentally multiplying larger single-digit numbers by applying their understanding of place value and the distributive property. Eventually, students learn long multiplication, where they multiply multi-digit numbers by breaking them down into partial products and then summing them up. These Stages of Calculation build a strong mathematical foundation, allowing students to develop essential multiplication skills that they will continue to refine and apply.
