Autumn
Autumn Term report
This term saw the election of the Planet Protectors from each class. The children had to prepare a speech about why they wanted to be a Planet Protector and represent their class. Two children were elected to form a committee.
Some of the responsibilities of our council include:
- Chairing meetings for their class and taking down their ideas
- Sharing information about campaigns the Planet Protectors are taking part in
- Making sure the school grounds are encouraging for nature
- Representing the school at events and meeting with other children
- Hosting assemblies to inform our friends about campaigns
- Carrying out eco surveys
- Reporting to governors and leaders of the school
- Maintaining the veg beds for the school
One of our first tasks was in collaboration with Eco-Schools. We participated in the Cut Your Carbon campaign. Our upper key stage 2 Planet Protectors ran an assembly explaining what the campaign was and how everybody could take part. We handed out checklists for children to take home to keep a tick list of different ways they could help reduce their carbon. We tracked our efforts over the whole of November and then submitted the data. We were very proud of our results which showed that over 60% of children made an effort and reduced their carbon.
We spent some time outside weeding the area where we will be able to grow vegetables next year. Towards the end of the autumn term, the Planet Protectors carried out an audit asking their peers what they wanted them to work on. This was discussed at meetings so that we could make plans for the following term.
