Sinking and Floating
In your child's Reception year science comes under the Understanding the World specific area. Children should be able to make observations and explain why some things occur and talk about changes. They should be familiar with simple scientific processes such as sinking and floating.
Today I would like your child to experiment with different objects to see if they float or sink when placed in water. This can be done at bath-time or in a kitchen sink or container - whatever suits you best. Find a selection of objects from around your home that they could use in the experiment. Please discuss with them what the words sinking and floating mean and the variables that might make a difference to the outcome.
Can your child make a hypothesis (prediction) about which objects might sink or float and why?
