The Moon, The stars and the Saturn V space rocket-Maths enrichment day.
Our new humanities topic this half term concerns the life of Neil Armstrong. He was the first person to step foot on the Moon in 1969. The rocket that took Neil, along with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on their journey into Space was the Saturn V space rocket. The children in Year 1 have been captivated by Neil's life story and have each completed a biography about his life.
As a link to this historical event the children applied their knowledge of 3D shapes to design their rockets. The children thought about which shapes would be appropriate to use and which would not. Then on our Maths enrichment day the children constructed their rockets according to their own designs. The humanities/ mathematics link was further enriched by an additional link to the Year 1 Design and Technology curriculum.
