Mary Anning

Our work has now begun on our new topic all about dinosaurs... we have been reading all about the  famous English paleontologist, Mary Anning. The year 1 children know all about her now!

Mary Anning discovered the skeleton of an  ichthyosaurus  in the cliffs at Lyme Regis, even though she was 12, poor and only had very little education.

We have written a storymap about Mary's life as a child. We have learned about the day she discovered the skeleton in the excellent childrens book "Stone Girl, Bone Girl"  by Laurence Anholt.

We re-enacted Mary's story in our drama lesson which helped the children to understand the story. Take a look ... this made writing about Mary much easier for the children in Year 1.
We have learned about dinosaurs which were carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We have researched the features of each. We have dug a dinosaur out of the ice a little bit like Mary dug the skeleton out of the cliffs in our story. Our dinosaur discovery was a T-rex though!
