In the National Curriculum (2014) for Year 1, in English....
Pupils should be taught to:
- sit correctly at a table, holding a pencil comfortably and correctly
- begin to form lower-case letters in the correct direction, starting and finishing in the right place
- form capital letters
- form digits 0-9
So in class this week we have been trying really hard to form letters correctly. This is very tricky for some children and so we decided to award prizes for those who tried very hard to copy a poem about the Moon. It is easier to copy a poem than it is to try to compose a poem when you have to also concentrate on starting letters in the right place, with letters sitting on the line AND think about ascenders and descenders. The children tried very hard to write as neatly as they could. Well done to everyone who won a prize for handwriting this week.
