'Bonfire Night' theme in Reception class
This week, our learning in reception class has been all about 'Bonfire Night'. We have been creating firework themed art work, watching firework videos, made wooden bonfires (pretend) with the planks and blocks in the outdoor area, counted fireworks, used instruments to recreate firework sounds, created jewelled firework patterns and written the numeral to represent the number of gems in each, matched the number of stickers to numerals on 'firework rockets', written a shopping list for 'Wally', the class puppet, and finally, made and eaten chocolate apples from the ingredients on our shopping lists. Phew! What a busy week!
As if that was not enough, we have also begun phase 2 of 'Letters and Sounds' in our phonics sessions. This means that we have been learning to recognise the letters 's', 'a', 't' and 'p' and the sounds that they make. We have also practised forming them in lots of different ways, forming them in the air with our fingers, on our palms, on the backs of our friends to see if we could feel the letter being formed correctly, and finally, on paper with felt tip pens. On Friday, we even began to read a few simple words that contained some or all of those four letters.
Finally, I would like to remind you about the upcoming meeting about reading and phonics that will be held on Tuesday 15th November at 6pm. If you would like to know more about either of these two areas of learning, please see the attached letter, which I sent out last week, for more details.
